Project Clean Slate FAQs
Project Clean Slate is a City of Detroit initiative that assists eligible residents expunge criminal convictions and improve access to additional employment, housing, and educational opportunities. Project Clean Slate is completely free! PCS provides legal assistants and attorneys to support with the expungement process at no cost.
PCS is open to City of Detroit residents only. Applicants must provide proof of Detroit residency
Project Clean Slate is open to City of Detroit residents only. If you are not a Detroit resident, consider contacting your local Michigan Works! Agency, Lakeshore Legal Aid, or the Legal Aid and Defenders Association .

On average, the expungement process takes less than one year from the time of registration to the expungement hearing. This process is completed in 5 steps:
- Eligibility review
- Paperwork signing and fingerprinting
- Order and review certified records from court of conviction
- Preparation of application for filing and subsequent filing and service
- Expungement hearing
Gather documents that show positive behavior and life events since your conviction. Consider volunteering at a non-profit organization (i.e. place of worship, soup kitchen, shelter, etc.).
