Mayor, Detroit Pistons, and Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation announce completion of 26-acre Romanowski Park
Today, Mayor Mike Duggan joined community members and partners, Detroit Pistons and Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation to announce the completion of $1.65 million dollars of renovations at Romanowski Park.
For years, Romanowski Park was in disrepair until in 2018 community engagement began and a new vision for Romanowski was developed. The project was started in response to the failing conditions at the park. The last renovation was about 20 years ago and due to the heavy use of the park renovating it became a priority. The new renovations include a perimeter walking path, new play equipment, picnic tables and benches, and the existing tennis courts were converted into futsal and pickleball courts funded by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The Detroit Pistons also funded resurfacing of the 18-hoop basketball court on the St. John Avenue side of the park; and funding from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation supported restroom and soccer field improvements. The City of Detroit is proud to restore Romanowski so it can continue to be an asset for the Southwest community.
“The upgrades at Romanowski park would not be possible if it weren’t for help from our partners, said Mayor Duggan. “We are so grateful to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Detroit Pistons, and Ralph C. Wilson Foundation for their continued support.”
“Investing in the infrastructure of Romanowski Park means investing in the families and youth of this community by encouraging sports sampling, helping provide increased access to green space, and promoting a lifelong engagement with physical activity,” said Jim Boyle, Vice President of Programs and Communications at the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation. “We’re proud to support the City of Detroit as they work to establish high-quality park amenities for the City’s residents.”
“We are pleased to partner with the Ralph C. Wilson Foundation and Detroit Parks & Recreation to beautify and update the basketball courts at Romanowski Park,” said Arn Tellem, Vice Chairman for the Detroit Pistons. “Providing new basketball courts is more important than ever to give kids and Detroiters of all ages healthy environments to stay active in a safe and responsible way.”
