Detroit Fire Department launches Self-Re-Inspection Program to assist small business owners
- Program designed to make it easier for small business owners with minor violations to achieve compliance
- Open to low-hazard businesses under 2,000 SF with minor issues
- Businesses will have access to an online self-re-inspection checklist
The Detroit Fire Department (DFD) is excited to announce the launch of its Small Business Self Re-Inspection Program, designed to make it easier for business owners to address and clear minor fire code violations. This innovative program provides eligible small businesses with the tools and resources needed to conduct self-re-inspections, ensuring compliance with fire safety regulations while reducing the need for follow-up visits from fire inspectors.
The program is open to low-hazard small businesses under 2,000 square feet that do not have complex fire safety systems requiring specialized inspection. Business owners will have access to a digital Self-Re-Inspection Checklist, which can be found in their fire inspection report emailed through Tyler Tech (MobileEyes).
Some examples of violations that may be corrected through the new Self Re-Inspection program are: exit signs, electrical issues, fire extinguishers and fire extinguisher placement.
Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms emphasized the program's goal of fostering stronger partnerships with the business community, "The Detroit Fire Department is committed to working with our small business owners to create a safer city. By allowing eligible businesses to conduct their own re-inspections, we’re streamlining the process while ensuring fire safety remains a top priority."
The Small Business Self Re-Inspection is run through Detroit’s Fire Marshal Division, which is responsible for ensuring compliance with fire safety regulations citywide. Fire Marshal Don Thomas highlighted the convenience and efficiency of the program, "This self-re-inspection initiative is a game-changer for Detroit’s small businesses. It empowers business owners to take an active role in maintaining fire safety while also reducing the burden of scheduling in-person follow-ups."
"Fire safety is a shared responsibility,” said Fire Prevention Chief Dennis Hunter. “This program gives business owners clear guidance on addressing potential hazards and keeping their establishments safe for employees and customers alike."
Through this program, small business owners can review their compliance status, correct any minor violations, and submit verification of corrections directly through the system—helping them avoid unnecessary delays and costly re-inspections.
