Council Member Angela Whitfield Calloway is a lifelong Detroiter who proudly serves the Detroit City Council for District 2. Before becoming elected, she enjoyed a career as an adult education instructor, human resources administrator, hearing officer, and small business owner. She graduated from Cooley High School, received a Bachelor of Arts in English and Education from Spelman College in Atlanta, GA, earned a law degree from Detroit College of Law, and graduated from The Campaign School of Yale Law.
Council Member Whitfield Calloway advocates fearlessly for quality education, safer and cleaner neighborhoods, and improvements in the quality of life for the underrepresented citizens of Detroit. Her mission as an elected member of the Detroit City Council is to uphold the best interests of the residents of District 2. She has initiated two task forces in her first year in office- Human & Sex Trafficking and Youth & Civic Engagement. Council Member Whitfield Calloway serves as the Chair of the Rules Committee, the Vice-Chair of the Neighborhood and Community Services Standing Committee, and is an Internal Operations Standing Committee member. Council Member Whitfield Calloway also sits on the Board of Directors for the Detroit Wayne County Health Authority.
Council Member Whitfield Calloway has dedicated countless service hours as a Census Bureau numerator and canvasser. She has participated in property tax foreclosure prevention through Neighbor 2 Neighbor, provided free community notarization services, worked with the Area Office on Aging for 25 years, directed and managed a historic non-profit for minority women, and volunteered with many neighborhood organizations. Council Member Whitfield Calloway is a true grassroots leader who has centered her life on civic engagement, service, and leadership.
Council Member Whitfield Calloway is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, the NAACP, the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College Detroit Chapter, the National Association of Hearing Officers, and the United Nations Local Chapter.
